Things That Could Kill You

No, I'm not talking about an episode of Surreal Life or America's Next Top Model with her witchiness Janice Dickinson.

I'm talking drinks - specifically, your caffeinated bevvie of choice.

Thanks to a link to Energy Fiend courtesy of one of my favourite reads, I've just learned I could drink 270.99 cans of Coca-Cola C2 before croaking. Altough I know people who can easily drink a dozen cans of the stuff in one day - I can't picture drinking 3 in one day, let alone 270.99!

Of course, that little calculator isn't all that serious, but the latest research from Environmental Defence is. They're the group behind a scary little study and 48-page report entitled Toxic Nation: A Report on Pollution in Canadians. The story originally broke at the beginning of November with a report from CTV, and I've been watching to see whether or not the story would grow legs. Interestingly, it hasn't gone as far as I would have expected - which is a little odd considering one of the 11 people tested was artist & environmentalist Robert Bateman.

The gist?

"A cocktail of harmful toxic chemicals has been found inside every person tested in a Canada-wide study, released today by Environmental Defence. Two volunteers were tested in British Columbia , one in Alberta, one in Manitoba, three in Ontario, three in Quebec and one in Newfoundland and Labrador .

The groundbreaking report, Toxic Nation: A Report on Pollution in Canadians, reveals that toxic chemicals, such as DDT, PCBs, stain repellants, flame retardants, mercury and lead, are contaminating Canadians. Many of the chemicals discovered in the bodies of Canadians are associated with cancer, hormone disruption, reproductive disorders, respiratory illnesses and harming the development of children."

I'm still working my way through the results, trying to discover for myself if I should be alarmed (so far I'm leaning towards yes). I'm interested to know if anyone else out there saw the news reports, has had an opportunity to read the report, or has thoughts on it?
